Our 8th-grade scientists are "going bananas" for genetics! 🍌 During their latest science unit, students put their hypotheses to the test by performing a DNA extraction on bananas. Every group successfully isolated the genetic material, getting a firsthand look at that distinct, jelly-like DNA. 🧬 It was an incredible hands-on way to explore the building blocks of life and strengthen their inquiry skills. 🔬🧪

NFL Star Maema Njongmeta Inspires AJHS! 🏈🎺
It was an incredible day at AJHS as we welcomed back one of our own! Alumni and current NFL linebacker Maema Njongmeta visited our students to share his inspiring journey from our hallways to the professional turf. 🏟️✨

Njongmeta took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about playing the trumpet in Mrs. Rakickas’s class (who is still rocking it as our band teacher today! 🎶). Now a member of the Carolina Panthers 🐈‍⬛ (and formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals), he spoke candidly about what it takes to reach the highest level of athletics.

Beyond football, Njongmeta emphasized the power of mental fortitude and community. He left our students with powerful words to live by, like "Speak life into yourself" and "Engage with the people who believe in you." 🗣️✨

The visit wrapped up with a Q&A where students got to connect personally with a pro! Thank you, Maema, for providing our students with a roadmap to tackle their goals with confidence! 🙌

Headline: Celebrating Excellence in D102! 🌟

At the April 13 Board of Education meeting, we were honored to recognize five exceptional students from each of our schools, ranging from Early Childhood through 8th grade.

These students were nominated by their teachers and principals for truly embodying the core competencies of our Portrait of a Graduate. Whether it’s leadership, empathy, or critical thinking, these young leaders are setting a fantastic example for their peers!

Board President Sklansky and Dr. McIntyre presented each recipient with a special keychain and certificate to commemorate their achievements. Join us in giving a huge round of applause to these outstanding D102 students! 👏🎓

✨ Success by Design at AJHS! 🚀
Mrs. Byrne and Mrs. Dengsavang’s ELA students recently completed a research unit exploring how individuals achieve success despite significant challenges. Students analyzed reliable sources and identified key traits such as perseverance and leadership that fueled their subjects' accomplishments.

This study revealed that success results from developed skills rather than luck, thereby enhancing their critical thinking and research abilities. The unit inspired the class by proving that dedication can turn any obstacle into an opportunity. This hands-on project provided students with both academic growth and a roadmap for their own future goals.

🏐 Game on, AJHS! 🏐

April has been absolutely packed with fun, and our recent Staff Volleyball Game was a major highlight! Our Student Council knocked it out of the park by hosting an epic after-school showdown that brought the heat to the gym. 🔥

Nearly 250 students stayed after school to pack the stands and cheer on 30 staff members, including Superintendent McIntyre! It was a high-energy celebration of school spirit and the perfect way to wrap up a fun-filled month.

Beyond the cheers, this event was a huge win for our learners. We are thrilled to announce that we raised $1,600 to fund new resources for the AJHS library! 📚✨

This is what community looks like in action. High-fives to our Student Council for their leadership and to everyone who came out to support! 👏💙

📚 Big Wins for Our Super Readers! 🏆
Huge round of applause for the 65 incredible students at Pritchett who crushed the 3rd Grade Reading Challenge! From November to March, these dedicated "Super Readers" dove into books from the Illinois Monarch and Bluestem Award lists.

These students didn't just read from a list of books: They even took notes, tackled weekly challenges, and stayed committed to their reading goals for months. We are so proud of the hard work and literary stamina shown by every single participant. You all proved that reading is a superpower! 🦸‍♂️📖

🐾 A "Paw-some" Time at the Tripp Library! 📚
Tripp's recent family book club meeting was a tail-wagging success! 🐕✨ The group read the story of "Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog," and the D102 Therapy Dog team helped bring the pages to life! 📖🐶

Mrs. Fasuna, founder of the D102 Therapy Dog program, shared the inspiring story of how the program began, and Tripp's principal, Mrs. Schenk, introduced us to her dog, Sushi! 🐾🏫 Together, they walked families through the process of qualifying a dog for therapy work. ✅🐕‍🦺

Participating families turned recycled T-shirts into handmade dog toys 👕🧶, which were all donated to the Heartland Animal Shelter in Wheeling to help pups in search of their forever homes! 🏠❤️🐾

🎨 Recycled Art in Early Childhood! 🌍
Our EC students turned "trash" into treasure! ✨ Through their recent recycling unit, students used cardboard boxes, paper rolls, and old magazines to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. 📦🗞️🖌️

By gluing and painting these everyday items, our little artists learned how to reuse instead of throw away, all while teaching the importance of protecting our Earth! ♻️🌱

The kids were so proud to see their creative ideas come to life! 🙌🌟

The future is looking bright at AJHS! 🚀✨

AJHS hosted Career Day, an event held every three years for our 6th-8th graders. Over 40 community volunteers stopped by to share their expertise, career journeys, and the education needed to succeed! 🎓💼

Students went behind the scenes with:
👨‍✈️ Pilots & Aerospace Engineers
⚖️ Attorneys
🏥 Medical Professionals
👟 Athletic Trainers
🏢 Business Owners ...and more!

Thanks to our very own D102 Alumni who returned to inspire the next generation, including a rocket scientist who was currently working on the Artemis II mission! 🌕🛰️ They. made a genuine impact on our students (and staff, too!).

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers for investing in our students' futures.

AJHS headed into Spring Break with a CEO mindset! 🚀

Can you believe spring break was one month ago? Before the break, AJHS students wrapped up the quarter with another awesome Entrepreneur Business Fair! Their work was incredible!

After weeks of learning about the business world, where they learned about launching a business, marketing strategies, etc., our students launched their business to their teachers and classmates. Their projects were a mix of creative mock companies and real-world startups.

Many of their displays used interactive "spin-to-win" wheels and live demonstrations to engage their "clients" (classmates and teachers). We are so proud of the creativity shown by these young professionals.🏆
