We will be moving into District 102 soon, and my child has an IEP. What do I need to do?
If you are moving to District 102 during the summer months, check the main page of this website for registration information. If you are moving during the school year, you can register at your child's new school.
When you register, you will be asked to complete a Release of Records form. Be sure to check the box that says, "Individualized Education Program" (IEP). By doing so, you are giving your child's former school permission to send us his/her current IEP. Once we receive it, we will be able to set up an initial meeting with you.
Does District 102 have a summer school program for Special Education students?
Yes, we do. Our Extended School Year program (ESY) is for children with an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Enrollment in ESY is based on teacher recommendation. The summer school teachers work with the students on IEP goals and objectives.
If your student is not recommended for the ESY program, District 102 offers an Activity Based Summer School program where students can choose to participate in courses like cooking, sports, technology, reading, writing, world languages and more. Additional information will appear on the district website in the spring.
Will my Special Education student receive transportation to and from school?
If it is determined during your child's IEP meeting that he/she requires special transportation, it will be arranged. If they do not require special transportation, they may or may not receive bus service depending on how far you live from their school.
My student lives in District 102, but has been placed in a school outside of the district. Do I still need to register with District 102 every year?
Yes, you do. You are required by the state of Illinois to register your student every year in their "home" school district. You will receive the necessary paperwork during the summer. Please complete and return it in the envelope provided. You will also be notified if your child is required to have a physical, immunizations or a dental check up and when those things would be due. Be sure to submit all of the necessary forms on time to prevent any interruption in your child's education.
My child isn't due for an IEP meeting for a few months, but I have some concerns that might need to be addressed sooner. Who should I talk to?
Your best place to start is always with your student's teacher. If a meeting is necessary, one can be arranged.
I can't locate my copy of my child's most recent IEP. Can I get another copy?
Yes, you can call the Student Services office at (847)353-5675 and we will be happy to make a copy for you.
My child's doctor would like a copy of some of his/her Special Education records. Can you send him a copy?
We will gladly do that, but before we can send them, you will need to sign a Release of Records form that states exactly what we are sending and who we are sending it to. You can obtain a copy of the Release of Records form from the office at your child's school or at the bottom of the Parent Resources section of this website.
I need to reschedule my child's IEP meeting. Who should I call?
If a meeting must be rescheduled, please contact your student's teacher as soon as possible.
Can I get another copy of the Procedural Safeguards that came with my last IEP meeting invitation?
You can pick up a copy of the "Notice of Procedural Safeguards for Parents/Guardians of Students with Disabilities" in the office at your child's school. You can also visit the Parent Resources section of this website and find the Procedural Safeguard attachment at the bottom of the page.
My student is not in the Special Education program, but I have some concerns. What can I do?
Speak with your student's teacher. Whenever a concern arises, whether it is academic, social or emotional, our teachers are able to draw from a wide range of experience to implement a variety of strategies and interventions.
If the concern continues, the teacher might meet with you and the CAS (Collaborate-Achieve-Success) Team, which is typically comprised of a building administrator, the school psychologist and social worker. Depending on the conern, additional supports and interventions can be put into place, and your student's progress would be closely monitored.
Is there a website that will keep me up-to-date on Special Education in Illinois?
You can access the Illinois State Board of Education website at http://www.isbe.net. There is a very informative section for Parents/Students plus a lot of other useful information.
