Early Childhood

The mission statement of the Early Childhood Program is to provide a comprehensive, child-centered learning environment, which supports each child's development through a developmentally appropriate individualized education experience.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
District 102 offers a blended Early Childhood Program for children ages 3-5. Children are taught in classrooms which consist of approximately 5-6 children who are eligible for special education and related services and approximately 10 typically developing peers from the community. 

REGISTRATION INFORMATION





EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM INFORMATION:
District 102 has a screening process that all children must participate in before they can begin the Early Childhood Program. Screenings are held monthly at Pritchett Elementary School, 200 Horatio Blvd., Buffalo Grove on a first-come first-serve basis.  Screenings fill up quickly so call now even if your child is not 3 years of age.  To make an appointment to have your child screened please contact Teresa Streen or 847-353-5675

SCREENINGS

After a child is signed up for a screening, a packet of information is sent to the parents which includes:
  • Family History
  • At Risk Checklist
  • Home Language Survey
The above forms along with the forms listed below, should be sent to Teresa Streen at Pritchett School, 200 Horatio Blvd., Buffalo Grove.
Parents will meet individually with the social worker during the screening to discuss the above forms and will receive immediate feedback following the screening.

Screenings last approximately three hours with two time slots available, 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m or 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  Remaining screening dates available are:

District 102 uses a play-based screening process with the following areas being assessed:
  • Vocabulary
  • Visual Motor Integration
  • Language and Speech Development
  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills
  • Social Skills
  • Cognitive Skills

  • At Risk Teacher

  • Occupational Therapist
  • English Language Learner Teacher
  • Parents

Children qualify for the Early Childhood Program by meeting several criteria.  The qualifying factors are weighted differently depending upon severity.  Other risk factors will be considered based on the family history survey, home language survey and at-risk checklist.  Children may qualify for the program with one of the following eligibilities:

  • At Risk - Children who are determined to be at risk of academic failure.
  • Special Education - During the screening parents might also be asked for consent to complete a more thorough evaluation for their child.  Based on the evaluation, it will be determined whether a child is eligible to receive special education services.  Services include but are not limited to speech/language, occupatational therapy or physical therapy.
  • Paid - Children are not determined to qualify for either of the above eligibilities may attend as a paid student.  Paid students pay a montly tuition fee of $225.  There is no reduction in tuition due to absences, vacation or school breaks.
EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM STAFF/CURRICULUM
The Early Childhood staff includes a classroom teacher and a teacher assistant.  District 102 uses the Teaching Strategies GOLD curriculum which is designed to provide the children with a language based, child-centered, developmentally appropriate environment.  This curriculum incorporates a daily routine that focuses on the key experiences of language & literacy, socialization, music, movement, classification, number, space and time.  The combination of these components integrated into the classroom, provides the children with a healthy & positive learning environment.Classrooms are balanced using the 5-5-5 model:
  • 5 at risk eligible students
  • 5 special education eligible children
  • 5 paid tuition eligible children
Sample daily schedule:
  • 9:00 a.m. – 9:10 a.m. - Table Time
  • 9:10 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. - Circle Time
  • 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. - Discovery Time and Groups
  • 11:00 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. - Playground
  • 11:20 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. - Dismissal

Class Times:

  • Morning Session: 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (Children who are three years of age by September 1st)
  • Afternoon Session: 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Children who are four years of age by September 1st)
HEARING/VISION SCREENING
Children participating in a screening must pass a vision and hearing test taken at least one week prior to their screening.   Appointments are made for the hearing and vision test by calling the school nurse, Christine Straszewski at 847-353-5703.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is only provided for children who meet certain Special Education or At-Risk criteria.

PLEASE NOTE:  If your child has already participated in a screening within the last six months and you would like to register, please complete all the necessary registration paperwork that was given to you at the screening and contact Teresa Streen or 847-353-5675 to set up an appointment to submit all the necessary paperwork.  This is not the same paperwork that was sent to you prior to the screening.  Any required fees are due at the time of registration.  Your child may not begin the program without completed registration paperwork and payment of all required fees
