The alumni band concert was a huge success with nearly 50 alumni returning to practice and perform an evening concert with current 8th graders. The gym rocked with energy as they played pieces such as Marches of John Williams, Highlights from Jersey Boys, The Civil War, The Great Locomotive Chase and Fantasy on Yankee Doodle. "It was a fantastic opportunity for our 8th graders," notes student teacher Tracie Tatz. "Our band members sat every other seat between alumni who also play for Stevenson's band.
I noticed that the 8th graders played to the next level as they teamed with the older kids." It's also a great transition for Aptakisic students. "These 8th graders will have mentors and someone they recognize this summer when they attend SHS band camp." During practice, band director Thomas Eifert told the group how much he loved to play in band from grade school through college, and when he began teaching, he learned that he absolutely loved to teach kids in band. "I am so fortunate to be student teaching with Mr. Eifert who taught me band when I attended D102," continues Ms. Tatz. When alumni were asked why they came back for the concert, the universal answer was "because of Mr. Eifert!" A huge thank you to both Meridian Middle School Band Director Allison Rakickas and Ms.Tatz who assisted with the ALumni Band concert. It was wonderful that a few college students were able to attend, and we've set the date for next year to accommodate more. Next year's Alumni Band Concert will be the first Thursday after break, January 10, 2013. Alumni in college are asked to wear their college colors.
