During a Weather Unit for 6th grade science, Kenny, Joey and AJ researched a tornado that wiped out 75% of the town of Siren, Wisconsin in 2001. Sixth grade teacher Maralee Scott contacted Siren's Chamber of Commerce and arranged for the boys to interview Sheriff Dean Roland via a conference call. The boys' noted, "Sheriff Roland moved everyone to safety first, not even thinking about himself." The boys gained more than a grade. This rich learning experience ignited a discussion about natural disasters and the complex issues involved
when caring for large numbers of people.
