Aptakisic's fifth annual Mix It Up Week took place at the end of October centering on the diverse world we live. The week was devoted to tolerance and diversity education. It began with an assembly by
Reality Theatre, a local acting group comprised of high school students who write and act in their own skits focusing on topics affecting junior high students. During the mid-week gym class, teachers led small group discussions and activities to help students understand sterotypes and prejudices. Students also participated in a Mix It Up Day at lunch where they were encouraged to sit at tables different than usual social circles.
All students received Mix It Up Week COEXIST themed magnets. Students has to option to participate in an essay contest writing about "What Diversity Means to Me." Some also attended a brainstorming leadership meeting with Buffalo Grove trustee and founder of Bullying Gone, Mike Terson. While students participated in many thought provoking activities, the small group discussions were amongst the most meaningful of the weeks' programs.
