Staff Gain Deeper Understanding of Cultures D102 Serves

Last year, staff continued learning about and developing strategies in celebrating out rich diversity. In preparation for this school year, ancillary staff attended Part II of Spotlight on Culture which allowed staff to gain an even deeper understanding of the various cultures we serve. District 102 has a student population that speaks 46 different languages and those parents seek the services of our support staff regularly.

"Understanding other countries' school systems, life styles, general attitudes, values, and beliefs will increase our sensitivity and effectiveness in working with our families," notes Teaching and Learning Coordinator Amy Gannon. We are privileged to be part of such a diverse learning community.

Our guest speakers included Dr. Miho Matsugu who grew up in Japan (above photo). She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Japanese Studies Program at DePaul University. Ms. Hyeyoung Lee (next photo below) was born in Pusan, South Korea where she attended school through college. She is Director of Senior Services and Public Benefits for the Department of Korean American Community Services. Dr. Uma Bhatia who was born and raised in India is shown in the last photo. She is a National Board Certified ELL teacher in District 54 and an adjunct instructor at the Illinois Resource Center for National-Louis University.
