Weather
is a common science unit for both second and sixth graders. Through a
Subject Area Learning Team (SALT) meeting, two District 102 teachers
developed a fantastic science event to further explore weather and develop sixth grade students' leadership skills.
Meridian sixth graders wrote
letters to the second graders to introduce themselves and the science
event. The second graders were paired with sixth grade "buddies" to
learn about Meridian's WeatherBug Station and share weather related
activities such as building wind vanes, rain gauges and anemometers. The
visitors participated in a scavenger hunt to reinforce weather words,
wrote weather related poetry, and completed WeatherBug Achieve computer
activities.
Members of SALT committees are encouraged to explore new learning models as a way to develop student strengths in critical thinking, effective communication, innovative and courageous exploration, and complex problem-solving. That is exactly what teachers Maralee Scott and Barb Novak did in initiating this wonderful science event.
