Recently, sixth graders from Meridian participated in a field trip to
Half Day Forest Preserve. The program provided hands-on learning about
biodiversity (the variety of native plants and animals in the area) and
restoration of natural areas.
During the restoration activity as shown in the photos, students cut invasive trees and shrubs (most often honeysuckle and buckthorn) out of natural areas. The invasive plants that the children removed are linked to the declining populations of some songbirds. Field trips like these are wonderful opportunities to bring science to life and connect classroom lessons to our world.
