BOARD OF EDUCATION

District 102 Board Meeting Highlights for April 9, 2012

STAFF AND STUDENT PRESENTATION – IPAD 5TH GRADE PILOT
Mrs. Cummins, Mrs. Curtis and 5th grade students Emma Kolesky, Elliott Koriath, Abby
Labow, and Abby Rubenstein shared their experiences and discoveries made while
piloting iPads this school year. Teachers and students were equally excited about the
world of knowledge available to them via this device which allows them a more
productive and engaging way to complete assignments, communicate with peers,
collaborate about school, and present their learning in a creative way. Students were very
comfortable demonstrating their technical expertise to the Board. A new initiative
planned for the upcoming school year is for all fifth and seventh grade students to have
their own iPad to enhance 21st century learning. Mrs. Cummins and Mrs. Curtis both
expressed the view that it would be very beneficial if students were allowed to take their
iPads home for the purpose of continuous learning.

APRIL 20 TEACHER INSTITUTE DAY
The April 20 Institute Day will begin with the keynote speaker, Michael Brandwein on
“The Real Truth about Sticks and Stones, Recharging our Batteries and Creating
Changeability.” The new initiatives for 2012-2013 will be presented, and there are a series
of rotations including EC pacing standards, ELA learning targets, SEEK connections to
technology and library related topics, music and art teachers on the Humanities SALT,
SPED teachers and nurses on strategies for children with autism, a review of Fitness
Gram programs, Charlene Chausis on the personal technology initiative, The Ancient
World textbook adoption, math placement exams for new students, new ELA pacing
guides and writing rubrics, Science SALT initiatives, and the new AIMS web tool and
programs that support the behavioral RtI.

SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE
Dr. Hudson reported that 47 former District 102 students applied for district-sponsored
scholarships as they prepare to graduate from Stevenson High School. In addition to
three $500 Universal Values of Integrity Scholarships awarded by the Aptakisic Business
Corp, PTO, and district, Jeffrey and Cathy Newman will award two $1,000 scholarships
in honor of Jeff’s 20-year service to the Aptakisic-Tripp School District 102 Board of
Education. The scholarship reception will be held at the Arboretum Club on Thursday,
May 24th at 7:00 p.m.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP
Dr. Hudson reported that more than 150 families attended the April 5 Kindergarten
Registration/Round-up at Pritchett and Tripp Elementary Schools. Parents learned more
about kindergarten and related services while the soon-to-be kindergartners were
assessed in a natural classroom setting. Those who still need to register for kindergarten
should call either Pritchett Elementary School (847/353-5700) or Tripp Elementary
School (847/955-3600) depending on where a child is slated to attend.

NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION 2012 72ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN BOSTON, APRIL 21-23, 2012
Dr. Dunkin shared some of the presentation that Board members Friedlander and Ross,
and Drs. Dunkin, Hudson, and Mr. Donovan will be presenting at this prestigious
conference. The topic is Strategic Planning That Gathers No Dust: A 21st Century
Approach to Long-Range Planning and it will be part of the “Share the Success”
Educational Programming.

KASARDA ENROLLMENT REPORT
Dr. Dunkin reviewed current enrollment projections according to demographer Dr. John
Kasarda. According to his Series B projections (most likely) our enrollment next year,
kindergarten through 8th grade, should be 1,978 students, down from the past. One item
of note is that while our enrollment is declining, Stevenson is experiencing an upswing in
enrollment.

APPROVE TREASURER’S REPORT FOR FEBRUARY, 2012
Ms. Bachar presented the February, 2012 Treasurer’s Report. Cash on hand as of
February 29, 2012 was $29,392,887.69. Total investments were $2,476,480.00 with an
average interest rate of 0.54%. President Friedlander entertained a motion to approve the
Treasurer’s Report for February, 2012 as presented. Mrs. Ross moved, and Mr.
Rubenstein seconded the motion. Roll call vote: Mr. Friedlander, Mr. Graupe, Mrs.
Koriath, Mrs. Ross, and Mr. Rubenstein voted aye. Mr. Ostach not on line for this vote,
Mr. Lefar absent. Motion passed.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST
Ms. Bachar shared her reply to a March 7 Freedom of Information request from the
Illinois Education Association – NEA for 1) wage rates, by category, of all secretaries,
teacher aides and nurses at D. 102; 2) health insurance benefit cost paid by the district for
all secretaries, teacher aides, and nurses; and 3) the amount paid by all secretaries,
teacher aides, and nurses for district health insurance.

2012-2013 LUNCH PROGRAM
As Ms. Bachar reported at the March 19 Board meeting, the USDA has new regulations
requiring more fruit and vegetables in school lunches, which will increase costs
considerably. Administration is doubtful the current food service vendor can continue to
provide meals at the present rate. Administration feels there are two options: 1) rebid our
food service contract which could lead to problems with an unknown provider coming in
close to the start of a new school year, or 2) go off the National School Lunch program.
This will be a topic for further discussion on April 23.

OTHER ITEMS OF BUSINESS FOR DISCUSSION
The Board reviewed a letter from the Village of Buffalo Grove to the community as a
Tripp Elementary School Traffic Management Plan Follow-Up. The Village suggested a
number of items be implemented immediately but codified changes will not be enacted or
formally considered until this summer. This will allow for the opportunity to further
review and assess proposed modifications for the rest of this school year and allow the
school and the BG Police Department to communicate the traffic management plan
during school orientation. Tripp will continue to provide on site presence to enforce the
traffic management plans and the Police Department will monitor this area and conduct
enforcement.
